Saint Helena (1995)

Date of issue: August 29th, 1995
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 1/5

This another very elegant series, the art work is outstanding. Take time to read the text on the souvenir sheet. It talks about the possible extinction of the giant earwig. It is quite sad, even sadder is that the site of the future airport is located at the only place where they could still possibly be.

Michel #: 667
Scott #: 656
order: Araneae
family: Theridiidae
Argyrodes mellissi (O. P.-Cambridge, 1869)

Argyrodes mellissi is also the emblem of the S.N.C.G. (Saint Helena Nature Conservation Group) that appears on the top part of the souvenir sheet of the earwig stamp.

Saint Vincent - Canouan* (2012)

Date of issue: 2012
Name of issue: Insects of the Caribbean
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 4/10

I was pretty sure this series was cinderella, but it would appear that, by my latest finding, it is a legit issue.

There are some funny things in this issue. The first and third spider stamps are called "Wasp spider", a name sometimes given to spiders of the Argiope genus for their black and yellow abdomen. I guess they made a little search on the web for "wasp spider" and, of course, they came up with the family Pompilidae, a family of parasitic wasps (a.k.a. Tarantula hawks, Pepsis spp. and others) that are predators of spiders! Sit back and enjoy!

Even though the stamp shows the main part of the spider, the rest of the body is on the souvenir sheet, that is what I added this one in the souvenir sheet only section as well.

Saint Vincent - Union Island* (2012)

Date of issue: 2012
Name of issue: Spiders
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 4/4

I suspected this could be a cinderella issue, but the quality of the layout and the drawings left me perplex and the lack of quality on the research of the names kept me wondering. It would appear that, by my latest finding, it is a legit issue.

Interesting thing about this series, they used two species that are now synonymised: Epeira minax and Epeira variolata both now Eriophora ravilla.
