Ghana (1972)

Date of issue: April 21st, 1972
Name of issue: Internation book year
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 1/5

This is not a very convincing spider. One could be forgiven to think it is some kind of beetle (like a stag beetle), but the text confirms it is a spider (Anansi).

This series is also available as imperforates and on a souvenir sheet, which interestingly looks perforated, but is not (the "hole" are just part of the image!).

Ghana (1984)

Date of issue: december 12th, 1983 to February 8th, 1984
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 1/10

This issue has also been reused in 1988-1989 with an overprint surcharge on the stamps. For the longest time, it was next to impossible to find a complete set MNH of this issue.

Strangely, I have some complete sheets that have serial numbers and others that do now, see scans below.

Ghana (1988)

Date of issue: September 1988
Number of arachnid related stamps in issue: 1/10

This is the exact same series as in 1984, but they were overprinted with a surcharge.

I have searched for this issue for ever. Used to be impossible to find as MNH. I am still missing one stamp of this series, there is only one none and it has been used.

This overprint series is like a can of worms. There are so many variants created by overprinting errors. I have been lucky enough to find many of these variants.

Only the Stanley Gibbon catalog lists these special variants. Even in that catalog, they do not list all the variants, so I had to "invent" some codes to show them all.

Main two variants:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246m
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246m
(variant 436a / sans-serif "2")

Single inverted variants:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246ma (1)
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
surcharge inverted

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246ma (2)
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
surcharge inverted
variant B

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246ma
(variant 436a / sans-serif "2")
surcharge inverted
variant A

Double overprint variants:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mb
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
surcharge double

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mba (1)
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
surcharge double / one inverted

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mba (2)
(variant 436a / sans-serif "2")
surcharge double / one inverted

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mba (3)
surcharge double / one inverted
one variant 436 and one 436a

Space between "2" and "0" variant:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mi
space between "C20" and "00"

Small "0" in surcharge variant:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mj
small "0" in surcharge

Missing "2" variants:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246 x0
missing "2"

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246 x0
missing "2" / inverted surcharge

**Albino variant: this is a surcharge strike, but without ink, so the stamp appears embossed. Impossible to show on a scan.

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246alb
surcharge albino

Pairs:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246mb
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
surcharge double / diagonal shift

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246
one variant 436 and one 436a

C50.00 overprint (very rare)

Stanley Gibbon #: 1254

Stanley Gibbon #: 1254
missing "."

Full sheet:

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246m
(variant 436 / seriffed "2")
*last row overprint narrow space

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246m
(variant 436a / sans-serif "2")

Stanley Gibbon #: 1246m
(variant 436a / sans-serif "2")
diagonal overprint

double diagonal overprint
